Arthropods
Objectives: Observe the general characteristics of arthropods, explain how an arthropod is
an animal, describe specialization in arthropods
Directions: In your last activity you explored a phylum of animals called Porifera. Today you
will observe arthropods, another type of animal.
Reading
Read pages 54-57 in your book and complete the information below.
1. Another phylum of the animal kingdom is arthropoda. An arthropod is an _____________
that has an _______________________, a _______________ body, and jointed
attachments called ____________________. In addition, all arthropods have an ________
circulatory system, where blood leaves the vessels and bathes the internal organs. (Note:
humans have a closed system: blood travels through vessels and never leaves the vessels.)
2. The external skeleton is called the _________________. The exoskeleton has several
functions (list 2): __________________________________________________________.
It is made of a material called ______________. As an arthropod grows larger, it must
shed its exoskeleton through a process called ____________________.
3. (See pg. 246 in the Life Science book.) The bodies of arthropods are segmented, which
means they are divided into sections. Most arthropods have 2-3 body sections. The three
sections are: The _____________ contains the __________ organs. The middle section is
called the _________________ and the ______________ ________ are attached here.
And the last section is called the __________________ and contains the ______________
and _________________ organs. Some arthropods only have 2 body sections. They have
an abdomen and a hybrid or fused section called the (pg. 257) _____________________.
(This word means head-thorax.)
4. Arthropods also have appendages. There are several appendages: legs, wings, mouth
parts, etc. Arthropod appendages tend to be highly ___________________ (hey, that’s a
characteristic of animals!). One of the most noticeable appendages is found on the head
of arthropods: ____________________. These are appendages on the head that contain
sense organs. Some arthropods have one pair, others have two pairs, and some
arthropods, like arachnids, don’t have any at all.
5. There are several subgroups of arthropods. The major groups are the ________________,
_________________, _______________, __________________, and _______________.

6. Each group is distinguished by a couple characteristics: number of body sections, number
of legs, antennae, and some body features (like wings). Complete the table below to see
how each group differs.
Crustaceans
Arachnids
Insects
Body Sections
Num. of Legs
Num. of Antennae
7. We will do more focused studies of insects and crustaceans. Continue below to learn more
about arachnids and millipedes and centipedes. Use the Animals book (58-61).
8. Arachnids only have _______ body sections. All arachnids have ______ pairs of legs and
do not have any _______________. They have a specialized breathing organs called
_________ ______________.
9. There are four groups of arachnids: _____________, ___________, _____________ and
_________________.
10.Spiders are unique from other arachnids in that they build (LS, 259) _________ to
capture their food. It is important to note that not all spiders build webs. Some hunt down
their prey. Spiders also have a pair of hallow (LS, 259) _______________ to inject poison.
11.Ticks are ________________ because they harm their host and are able to spread
disease.
12.Scorpions are distinguishable by a spine-like ______________ found at the end of its
abdomen. They also have claw-like pincers which do not count as pair of legs.
13.Another group of arthropods are the millipedes and centipedes. The primary difference
between these organisms is the number of legs on each body segment. Centipedes only
have _______ pair of legs on their body segments while millipedes have ______ pairs of
legs on their body segments. In addition, centipedes are ______________, using their
sharp jaws to capture their prey. This makes them _______________ because they feed on
other animals, or meat. In contrast, millipedes are ________________ because they feed
on plant material.
