What the Teacher Needs to Know about Feature L:
Other Syllable Juncture Doubling
(Description – pp. 152-157, Word Lists – pp. 232-235)
Some knowledge of Feature K (doubling and e-drop with ed and ing) is helpful
for studying Feature L but not mandatory. The focus in Feature L is on the syllable
junctures within base words (market) rather than between a base word and an ending
(hopping).
Students learn about two types of syllables – open and closed. Open syllables end
with a long vowel sound (pa-per, sea-son) while closed syllables end with a consonant
and have a short vowel sound (en-ter, but-ter, hop-ping). Closed syllables are usually
followed by another consonant
The patterns where the syllables come together (syllable junctures) are either
VCV (vowel/consonant/vowel) or VCCV (vowel/consonant/consonant/vowel). Doublets
are special types of the VCCV pattern in which both consonants are the same (dipper).
Sorts will be done in which students look at the following categories:
♦ VCV open
♦ VCV closed
♦ VCCV
♦ doublet
Sometimes vowel sounds are represented with two letters (season). These are
considered a single vowel when sorting, so the word season would fit under the VCV
pattern. Likewise blends and digraphs are considered as one unit, so bather would also
be considered a VCV pattern since the th counts as a single consonant.
Students need a basic knowledge of across-syllable patterns in order to spell and
pronounce words:
♦ when a syllable ends with a long vowel sound, the consonant that follows is
not doubled
♦ when a syllable has a short vowel sound, two consonants usually follow it
(double); however, there are many exceptions. Students need to attend closely
to the spelling of words with closed syllables to determine whether or not they
have one or two consonants
In decoding words, VCCV patterns are usually not too difficult. The syllable
division is between the consonants. However, in VCV patterns, the division can be either
before or after the consonant. Teach students to first try dividing words before the
consonant and using a long vowel sound. If this doesn’t work, then try dividing the word
after the consonant and using a short vowel sound.

After students understand patterns that extend across syllable boundaries, they are
ready to learn about syllable stress or accent. The following generalities apply:
♦ stressed syllables often have a long vowel sound
♦ prefixes and suffixes are rarely stressed
♦ in two-syllable words, the first syllable is usually accented
♦ Syllables that have a schwa sound are not stressed
Let students examine words to determine whether the stress is on the first or
second syllable. Start with two syllable words. When they can determine the stressed
syllable without mistakes and with speed and accuracy, then introduce polysyllabic
words.
After providing students with many opportunities to explore stress in words, have
students do some highly challenging sorts, sorting by sound (stress) and pattern (acrosssyllable structure) simultaneously. These categories might be:
♦ open VCV, stress on 1st syllable
♦ open VCV, stress on 2nd syllable
♦ VCCV, stress on 1st syllable
♦ VCCV, stress on 2nd syllable
♦ doublet
