How to Extract the Pigment from Leaves
Procedures:
To extract the pigment from leaves, you will need first to boil them in water for several minutes. Use
fresh, soft leaves such as spinach, geranium, or coleus and place them in a beaker of water. Use a hot
plate for heating this mixture. This step softens the leaves.
Remove the leaves from the water and squeeze the water out of them. Place these leaves in a beaker
containing a small amount of warm alcohol. Note: A number of alcohols can be used. The most common
ones are isopropyl alcohol and ethyl alcohol. Be careful when you heat the alcohol—it is highly flammable. Remember, it only needs to be warm.
Use a stirring rod to mash the leaves in the alcohol. Also, reheat slightly, using a hot plate. When the
alcohol has turned a dark green color, the process is complete. The pigment from the leaves is now dissolved in alcohol.
