What is Mantle of the Expert?
What’s the role of the pupil?
Mantle of the expert allows pupils to take
charge and direct their own learning
journey for the unit/topic.
What's the role of the teacher?
The teacher facilitates the learning…this
can be hard to do as you have to allow
pupils to direct their own learning!

Project Brief…
Sawston Village College have asked your travel agency
to plan a number of Geographical educational trips to
the Middle East, Asia and Russia.
Your educational trip needs to include:
• Geographical features
– Weather and climate
– Physical and Human features
– Different areas in the country that pupils should
visit (multi city/area)
• Historical attractions
• Religious attractions
• Cultural attractions
Project Brief…
You need to plan and consider…
Costs of each of the trips
• Air travel – could you use budget/low cost airlines?
• Coach costs – how much will petrol/diesel cost?
• Accommodation costs – will pupils stay in youth
hostels, hotels, B&Bs, luxury hotels?
• Food costs – will food and drinks be included?
• Activities for pupils – what are the costs of these?
Are group discounts available?
• Spending money for pupils – how much will they
need?
Tour Guidelines…
When planning your trip you need to think about and
provide evidence for…
• Educational aims of your visit – will it to focus on
the physical elements of the country e.g.
mountains, rivers, tectonic activity?
• Purpose of the activities – what is their
educational and geographical purpose? E.g. camel
riding in the Arabian Desert.
• Is it safe for pupils to go there – e.g. there are
no risks of war/conflict or terrorism. There are no
infectious diseases?
