• To convert light energy into chemical energy we depend on:
• Plants (chloroplasts)
• Protists (chloroplasts)
• Cyanobacteria (cell membrane)
• Mesophyll cells:
• Contain many chloroplasts for photosynthesis
• Stoma cells:
• Guard cells allow for gas exchange
• Thylakoids:
• Disk-like structures filled with chlorophyll
• Stroma
• Surrounding fluid
• A pigment which absorbs electromagnetic radiation
• Absorbs two wavelengths of light:
• Blue: 420 nm
• Red: 660 nm
CO2 + H2O  C6H12O6 + O2
carbon dioxide + water  glucose + oxygen
• Sunlight strikes the PSII and excites electrons
• Excited electron splits H2O into H+ ions and O2 gas
• Electrons flow through a series of membrane proteins moving
H+ ions across the membrane
• Sluggish electrons receive another photon of light in PSI
• Excited electrons are passed to NADP changing into NADPH
• Collection of H+ ions pass through ATP synthase
• ADP is converted into ATP

• CO2 is converted into G3P through a series of reactions
