Finding the narrative voice in
analytical and persuasive writing
Analytical –
Seeks to explore a central idea or question by breaking
down the components and showing the relationship
between the subordinate arguments and overall
controlling ideas.
Persuasive –
Takes a position FOR or AGAINST an issue and writes to
convince the reader to believe or do something
Expository –
Explain, Inform, Describe, or Define the subject to the
reader
Narrative –
Tells a story or part of a story
Fast Write
• Choose your favorite food/meal.
• You have 3 to 5 minutes to write a story that involves
this food/meal - Narrative
• You have 3 to 5 minutes to persuade people to
purchase this food/meal - Persuasive
• You have 3 to 5 minutes to analyze how this
food/meal represents EITHER you as a person OR the
world in which we live - Analytical
