WHAT IS IRONY?
There are three
different types
of irony.
What is VERBAL IRONY?
• This is a type of sarcasm.
• A person says the opposite of what he or
she really means.
• Example: “This is just the perfect ending
to this day.”
• You say this on a day when everything is
going wrong.
IRONY OF SITUATION
• This is the type of irony most often
found in stories.
• It is also the type of irony that happens
often in real life.
• Something happens that is the opposite
of what you are expecting.
EXAMPLES OF IRONY
• Example: The fire house burns down
while the firemen are out somewhere
else fighting a fire.
• In the story “Charles,” Laurie’s mother
finds out that there is no Charles in the
classroom, and Laurie has been causing
all the problems.

DRAMATIC IRONY
• This type of irony is often used in
plays, movies, and TV programs.
• The audience or reader knows
something that a character does
not know.
EXAMPLES OF
DRAMATIC IRONY
• As we are watching a movie, we know that
the murderer is hiding inside the house.
• As your friend is telling you how upset
she is that no one is doing anything
special for her birthday, you know that
there is going to be a surprise party for
her on Saturday night.
