Conflict in the 1920s- The Red
Scare and Labor Strikes
The Russian Revolution
• Czar Nicholas II led Russia through March 1917
– Absolute power – total control of country
– Led Russia into WWI which caused death,
starvation, and bad feelings from citizens
– Czar abdicated (stepped down) and gave power to
Alexander Kerensky
– Kerensky still wanted to stay in WWI
• Vladimir Lenin led an uprising against Kerensky
and Czar

Promised “peace, land, and bread”
Group was call “Bolsheviks” which stands for majority
Overthrew old government in November 1917
Made peace with Germany and left WWI
Took all privately owned farms, industries, land, and
transportation and put them under government
control
– Civil War started
• Russian Civil War
– Reds (Lenin’s side) vs. Whites (Other side)
– Reds believed in communism while Whites were
former landowners and government officials
– U.S. supported Whites because Reds were openly
against many American ideals
– Reds were victorious in 1920 and by 1922 set up a
communist state in the Union of Soviet Socialist
Republics (USSR)
• Communism- Single-party government in
which government owns all land, property,
and money
– Political, economic, and social system
– Government is greater than the individual
– Money activity- Teacher took all the money and
kept it
• Socialism- Government ownership, or Equal
citizen ownership of land and business

– People are EQUAL in many things
– Money activity- Teacher redistributed wealth
