Battle of Britain
• 1940 German Air force (luftwaffe) attacks United Kingdom
• The main objective was to gain superiority over Royal Air
Force, by attacking RAF airfields, aircraft factories, and
bases
• First major campaign fought with entirely air forces
• United Kingdom was able to hold off the Germans attack
• Considered turning point in the war for the United
Kingdom
Operation Barbarossa
• Largest
invasion in history of modern warfare
(1941)
• 3.9 millions Axis troops, 600,000 motor vehicles,
and 750,000 horses
• Germany tries to invade the Soviet Union
• Successful in the beginning taking a lot of Soviet
territory, but the Germans were never able to take
Moscow and the Soviets were able to push them
back
Operation Barbarossa
Battle of Stalingrad
• Complete disregard for civilian and military casualties
one of the bloodiest battles in the war (estimated 2
millions deaths)
• Germany was able to conquer 90% of the city
• But was never able to finish off the last of the Soviet
strong hold
• Eventually Soviets were able to push the Germans back

Operation Torch
• Attack North Africa which
was under Axis control
• British Initiative, thought it was most beneficial for future
invasion of Southern Europe. Also thought it was beneficial
to have control of Mediterranean sea
• Soviet implored Americans to open a second front in
Europe to help them, but Americans decided to go with the
British instead and fight in North Africa
• Fought in Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria all former French
colonies
Operation Husky
• Invasion
of Sicily (1943)
• It launched the Italian campaign and was fought
through both land and air
• Allied forces won the battle and this led to shipping
lanes in the Mediterranean Sea being opened
• Led to the Invasion of Italy and eventually victory over
Mussolini
Battle of Midway
• (1942) One of the most important battle of the Pacific
Campaign
• Japanese sought to eliminate the United States as a strategic
power on the Pacific
• Tried to lure American aircraft carriers, but American code
breakers found out the date and time of the attacks,
Americans were able have their own counter attack
• United States defeated the Japanese fleet, permanently
damaging the Japanese fleet
