Insolation and the Seasons
Insolation = INcoming SOLar radiation
• The part of the sun’s output of Electromagnetic
spectrum (SHORTWAVES) that is received by
Earth.
• The intensity of insolation is relative strength of
the sun’s radiation that reaches a specific area of
the Earth in a specific amount of time.
• The Sun emits shorter wavelength of radiation =
UV Radiation
• The Earth’s surface absorbs the shortwave uv
radiation and radiates longer wavelengths =
infrared radiation (HEAT)
A) Effects of Earth’s Atmosphere on
Insolation
• Approximately 51% of the total energy
reaching the Earth’s atmosphere is absorbed
by the Earth’s surface
• Earth’s atmosphere can absorb, reflect, scatter
or refract the sun’s radiation
• Most short-wave radiation is absorbed by
clouds, ozone, dust and Earth’s surface.
• Ozone, in the upper atmosphere absorbs
almost all of the ultraviolet radiation from the
sun.
• Over time, the amount of energy the Earth
absorbs, from insolation, Equals the amount
of energy the Earth radiates. This is called
Dynamic Equilibrium
Factors Affecting Absorption and
Reflection of Insolation
• Texture and color affect the absorption of
insolation by Earth’s surface
• Rough or uneven surfaces Absorb more
insolation and reflect less
• Surfaces with darker colors absorb more
insolation and reflect less
• Surfaces with lighter colors reflect more
insolation and absorb less.
• Water will heat up and cool off Slowly than an
equal area of land because water has a higher
specific heat

Food for Thought?
• What is the reason as to why the moon’s
temperatures are colder than ours?
• Do you think the greenhouse effect is a
positive or a negative?
Work to complete
• Work with ONE other person to complete the
Ch. 19 reading and questions. Whatever you
do not complete will be homework. DUE
