The Writing Process!
Notes and Discussion
Why should we learn to write
correctly?
¤ We will use writing in real life!
•writing emails
•taking notes at work meetings
•giving instructions to a coworker
•writing a report
•Working for a newspaper or magazine
company
•designing signs and layouts
•communicating across the world!
How do we write well?
We go through a WRITING PROCESS.
If we follow the steps, our writing will be of high quality!
There are 5 steps in the writing process.
The 5 steps of the WRITING PROCESS are:
1.Pre-write
2.Rough Draft
3.Revise
4.Edit
5.Final Draft
How do we Pre-write?
In this step, our goal is to put all of
the ideas in our heads onto paper.
Sometimes that means we have to
complete a little research , too.

Next, we write the Rough Draft.
How do we get started?!
First, think of a topic sentence for
your piece.
Then, write, write, write!
Focus on organizing your ideas.
Our thoughts are on paper, now we
REVISE.
There is A LOT to change when we revise! We make BIG changes.
First, we must Re-read our piece.
Then, we want to revise for:
•Word choice (Ex. Take out “stuff” and “thing”)
•Ideas (Did we stay on topic?)
•Organization (Are the ideas in an order that makes sense?)
•Voice (Do I sound the way I should for this piece?
Ex) School Essay = formal voice
After we have a new and different
draft, we can EDIT.
Now we can look for the SMALL
changes.
Focus on Conventions.
•Spelling
•Punctuation
•Grammar
Time for the last step: the
FINAL DRAFT!
Write or type a clean copy that is
ERROR FREE and MAKES SENSE.
You are ready to PUBLISH AND SHARE!
Let’s try it!
Usually, when we write, we are answering a question.
Ex)
Boss asks you for a sales report. You write it!
Your aunt asks about your summer vacation. You write it!
A college asks you to write an essay to get in to the school. You write it!
The trick is to know how to break apart the question.
Ask….
Do I need to do research?
Am I comparing and contrasting?
Am I explaining with details?
Am I describing a cause and effect?
Your prompt:
Compare and contrast your sixth grade school
year to seventh grade so far. Provide specific
examples to support your answer.
1. What is the question asking you to do?
Compare/Contrast 6th and 7th Grade
2. Who will be your audience?
Teacher and peers
3. What type of voice should you use when you write?
Formal Voice- sound mature and thoughtful.
4. What type of brainstorm would work best for this topic?
