Thomas Jefferson was the first president to be
inaugurated in DC. The first inauguration of
Thomas Jefferson as the third president of the
US was held on March 4, 1801. It was a mild day
in D.C the first time an inauguration had been
held there, with a 12 o’clock temperature was
about 55 degrees.
Louisiana purchase
In 1803, Robert Livingston and James
Monroe negotiated the Louisiana
Purchase for Thomas Jefferson. The
Louisiana Purchase was important
because it doubled the countries size.
The Louisiana purchase also increased
the countries natural resources. On
April 30, 1803 France sold 828,000
square miles of land west of the
Mississippi to the United States of
America in a treaty. President Thomas
Jefferson, in one of his greatest
achievements, more than doubled the
size of the United States at a time
when the nation's population growth
was beginning to quicken.
Marbury Vs Madison
• Marbury v. Madison, case decided in 1803 by the
U.S. Supreme Court. William Marbury had been
ordered justice of the peace in the District of
Columbia by President John Adams in the
"midnight appointments" at the very end of his
administration. When the new administration did
not deliver the commission, Marbury sued James
Madison, Jefferson's Secretary of State. The
decision established the doctrine of judicial
review, which recognizes the authority of courts
to declare statutes unconstitutional.
Jefferson’s Second Inaugural Address
• Jefferson spoke of his administration success.
He announced plans to connect to the west
better. George Clinton of New York was
elected Vice President. Chief Justice John
Marshall administered the oath of office in the
Senate Chamber at the Capitol.
Lewis & Clark
• Thomas Jefferson sent Meriwether Lewis and
William Clark on an expedition to the west.
They explored and mapped the new lands
they saw. They discovered many new plants,
and animals along the way.
