Vocabulary
(Domain Specific)
• Constantine: (274– 337) Roman Emperor
between 306 and 337. He issued the Edict
of Milan which outlawed the persecution
of Christians. He also founded the city of
Constantinople, the future capital of the
Byzantine Empire.
• Byzantine Empire: (330-1453) The eastern
half of the Roman Empire, which survived
after the fall of the Western Empire at the
end of the 5th century C.E. Its capital was
Constantinople, named after the Emperor
Constantine.
Activity
The Western Roman Empire crumbled in the fifth century as it
was overrun by invading Germanic tribes. However, the once
great empire had already undergone significant changes. It
had been divided into western and eastern empires, and its
capital had moved east from Rome to the Greek city of
Byzantium. The city would become known as Constantinople
after the emperor Constantine, who made it the new capital in
A.D. 330. For nearly a thousand years after the collapse of the
Western Empire, Byzantium and its flourishing capital would
carry on the glory of Rome.
