Q3 NOTES Social Studies Dark Ages, Middle Ages, Renaissance Spices were the most prized import and provided the greatest wealth to European merchants during the Middle Ages. A positive impact of trade on Europe in the Middle Ages was the fact that scientific, cultural, and artistic ideas were spread. Rice enabled Southeast Asia to obtain the manufactured goods it needed during the Middle Ages. Woven textiles were a major export of Western Europe in the Middle Ages. One way trade impacted the development of population centers in the Mediterranean region was the fact that port cities grew where goods could be sold and transported. Banks grew in Europe during the Middle Ages as a result of more trade. City-states started new colonies because 1) the Greeks wanted new resources 2) city-states were overpopulated 3) Greeks wanted new land. The main reason for exploration in Europe during the Middle Ages was the search for goods. European countries rushed to claim colonies in Southeast Asia in the 1500s to gain supplies of raw materials. During the Middle Ages, an unintended result of trade routes was the exchange of knowledge. During the Renaissance, there was a “rebirth” of interest in the works of writers and artists mainly from Greece and Rome. In Europe, during the 1400s, some spices were worth more than gold. As a result, explorers sailed for spice islands. Standards for weights and measurements became necessary as a result of increased trade in Europe during the Middle Ages. The period of time from the 14th to the 16th century is known as the Renaissance. A key feature of the Renaissance was an increased focus on individuals. A rediscovery of classical writings contributed to the onset of the Renaissance period. The word Renaissance usually refers to the rebirth of classical ideas and values. Nicolaus Copernicus, Leonardo da Vinci, and Johannes Gutenburg were all Renaissance inventors. The printing press, telescope, and flush toilet were all things invented during the Middle Ages. The invention of the microscope was a medical advance invented during the Renaissance. The use of perspective was a new discovery made by Renaissance artists. Humanism is the term that best describes the Renaissance interest in history, literature, public speaking, and art. Nicolaus Copernicus changed the understanding of Earth’s place in the Universe. Art, science, and education made great advances in Europe during the Renaissance. Dante wrote in Italian instead of Latin, which changed literature during the Renaissance.
