“HIV” stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus.



H – Human – This particular virus can only infect human beings.
I – Immunodeficiency – HIV weakens your immune system by
destroying important cells that fight disease and infection. A "deficient"
immune system can't protect you.
V – Virus – A virus can only reproduce itself by taking over a cell in the
body of its host.
“AIDS” stands for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome.




A – Acquired – AIDS is not something you inherit from your parents.
You acquire AIDS after birth.
I – Immuno – Your body’s immune system includes all the organs and
cells that work to fight off infection or disease.
D – Deficiency – You get AIDS when your immune system is "deficient,"
or isn't working the way it should.
S – Syndrome – A syndrome is a collection of symptoms and signs of
disease. AIDS is a syndrome, rather than a single disease, because it is
a complex illness with a wide range of complications and symptoms.
As noted above, AIDS is the final stage of HIV infection. People at this
stage of HIV disease have badly damaged immune systems, which put
them at risk for opportunistic infections (OIs).
No symptoms or flu like symptoms, NO CURE, NO Vaccine, Treatment Regimen
of pills
Four fluids HIV can be passed through: (blood, semen, vaginal secretions, breast
milk)
Chlamydia
Chlamydia is considered # 1 silent killer. Bacterial STD. Symptoms: Often
none, discharge, flue like, itching. Transmission: sexual intercourse, mom-baby.
Treatment antibiotics
PID: Pelvic inflammatory Disease
Inflammation of the upper female reproductive tract, Bacterial infection, Transmission: sexual
contact, untreated STDs, Symptoms: Fever, discharge, pain, treatment: Pelvic exam and
antibiotics.
Bacterial vaginosis is a mild infection of the vagina caused by bacteria. Normally, there are a lot
of "good" bacteria and some "bad" bacteria in the vagina. The good types help control the growth
of the bad types. In women with bacterial vaginosis, the balance is upset. There are not enough
good bacteria and too many bad bacteria.
Bacterial vaginosis is usually a mild problem that may go away on its own in a few days. But it
can lead to more serious problems. So it's a good idea to see your doctor and get treatment.
Men often no symptoms, females, smell, abnormal colored discharge, itching and burning. Treat
with antibiotic
Syphilis
Bacterial, can cause ulcers and chancer sores, brain damage, blindness, death, Sexual
intercourse, Mom to baby, antibiotics
Hepatitis B




Hepatitis B is a viral infection that attacks the liver and can cause both acute and chronic
disease.
The virus is transmitted through contact with the blood or other body fluids of an infected
person.
Inflammation of the liver, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, jaundice, NO CURE, Drugs
can help, there is a vaccination
Hepatitis C
The hepatitis C virus is a blood borne virus and the most common modes of infection are through
unsafe injection practices; inadequate sterilization of medical equipment in some health-care
settings; and unscreened blood and blood products.


Antiviral treatment is successful in 50–90% of persons treated; depending on the
treatment used, and has also been shown to reduce the development of liver cancer and
cirrhosis.
There is currently no vaccine for hepatitis C, however research in this area is ongoing.
You can catch it from:





Sharing drugs and needles
Having sex, especially if you have an STD, an HIV infection, several partners, or have
rough sex
Being stuck by infected needles
Birth -- a mother can pass it to a child
Trichomoniasis is a very common STD that is easy to cure. Parasite







Most men and women who are infected with Trichomoniasis do not have any
symptoms.
FOUL SMELL
Without treatment, Trichomoniasis can increase a person’s chances of getting or
spreading other STDs.
Pregnant women with Trichomoniasis can deliver premature (early) or low birth weight
babies
No symptoms in males, Women itching, burning, discharge, pain during sex, infection in
bladder and urethra
Use antibiotics to help get rid of this
A pubic louse causes itching in the area covered by pubic hair. Itching often gets worse at night.
The itching may start soon after getting infected with lice or it may not start for up to 2 - 4 weeks
after contact.
Other symptoms can include:




Skin reaction that causes skin to turn bluish-gray in color
Sores in the genital area due to bites and scratching
Sexual contact, sheets, towels, clothing, public toilets
Parasite
Yeast infections “Candida Fungus”
A vaginal yeast infection means that too many yeast cells are growing in
the vagina . These infections are very common. Although they can
bother you a lot, they are not usually serious. And treatment is simple a
prescription for antibiotic cream. Symptoms may include itching, redness,
burning feeling.
Gonorrhea
STD caused by bacteria that affects mucus membranes and genitals.
Transmission: Sexual contact, mom to baby, antibiotics both partner’s at same
time. Difficult to treat do to resistance
Herpes Simplex 1 and 2
STD caused by viral infection HSV1 and HSV2,
HSV1: cold sores, fever, blisters around the mouth
HSV2: Red bumps, blisters sores in genital area
Transmission: Contact with blisters, skin to skin contact,
NO CURE Treatment: medication to shorten outbreak (anti-viral medication)
HPV and Genital Warts: STD caused by group of viruses that can cause genital
warts. Transmission through sexual contact, No cure but warts can be surgically
removed. They do grow back. Vaccine to prevent cervical cancer
Scabies facts





Scabies is an itchy, highly contagious skin disease caused by an infestation by the itch mite
burrows in to the skin
Direct skin-to-skin contact is the mode of transmission
Medication can kill the mite. Must wash bedding and clothes to kill eggs.
A severe and relentless itch is the predominant symptom of scabies.
Sexual contact is the most common form of transmission among sexually active young people,
and scabies has been considered by many to be a sexually transmitted disease (STD).
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a common virus that can infect almost anyone. Most people
don't know they have CMV because it rarely causes symptoms. However, if you're
pregnant or have a weakened immune system, CMV is cause for concern.
Once infected with CMV, your body retains the virus for life. However, CMV usually
remains dormant if you're healthy.
CMV spreads from person to person through body fluids, such as blood, saliva, urine,
semen and breast milk. CMV spread through breast milk usually doesn't make the baby
sick. However, if you are pregnant and develop an active infection, you can pass the
virus to your baby.
There's no cure for CMV, but drugs can help treat newborns and people with weak
immune systems.

Fever
 Pneumonia
 Diarrhea
 Ulcers in the digestive tract, possible causing bleeding
 Hepatitis
 Inflammation of the brain (encephalitis)
 Behavioral changes
 Seizures
 Coma
 Visual impairment and blindness
Most people infected with CMV who are otherwise healthy experience few if any
symptoms. When first infected, some adults may have symptoms similar to
mononucleosis, including fatigue
HPV is so common that nearly all sexually active men and women get it at some
point in their lives. There are many different types of HPV. Some types can cause
health problems including genital warts and cancers. But there are vaccines that
can stop these health problems from happening.
Human Papilloma Virus three shots to help prevent cervical and genital warts.
