Whistle stop tour of building an app
• How we developed the ActiveME app
• What we learnt
• Some things to think about if you have an app idea
The ActiveME Story
• A smartphone app for people with CFS/ME to record and report their activity and energy levels
• ActiveME based on well established ‘paper and crayons’ tool widely used by patients and clinicians and pioneered by Dr Esther Crawley from RNHRD, Bath
Next steps
• Tendered for a technical partner
• Fine tuned the project brief

Where data is stored (all on the user’s phone)
What platform (Apple first)
Whether to integrate with other apps (not yet)
How much to charge (£1.49)
Phoned NHS Innovations North for help with the IP
Indigo turned the brief into a prototype
Gave it a name!
Almost launched…

Story so far
• 1642 downloads from around the world
• Good feedback about the benefits to people with CFS/ME
• Improved communication between clinical team and person with CFS/ME
• Plans to develop Android version
• Won the 2012 NHS Innovations North Bright Ideas in Health technology category
What we learnt
• The content is everything (but design important too)
• Patient involvement and clinical leadership from the start
• It took us longer than we expected (and cost more)
• Good to learn from other people’s experiences
• App building requires determination
• App building does not require loads of technical skills
• App building is lots of fun!
If you think an app is the answer…
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Be clear about the problem you want to solve
Is there already an app that does it?
Write it down on a side of A4
Protect your IP
Have lots of conversations about it
How much will it cost? How much will it earn? Is it a medical device?
If you think an app is the answer 2
• Keep having conversations and write it down on a side of A4 (again)
• Find a tech developer to work with
• User testing, medico‐legal disclaimers
• Marketing and launch
• AFTER you go live…. Maintenance, reviews, improvements and fixes
• Keep having conversations!
