Adding and Subtracting Fractions with the
same denominator
Rule: Keep the common denominator and add the numerator. Notice that the denominator does not change,
you only add the numerator.
Example: 2/8 + 4/8= 6/8= 3/4
Example: 3/5 -2/5= 1/5

Adding and Subtracting Fractions with different

Rule: Fractions must have the same denominators to add them.
Step 1: Find common denominator ( find the LCM of the two numbers or you can always multiply the
denominators together to find the common denominator )
Step 2: Rewrite the problem
Step 3: Add/subtract numerators
Step 4: simplify ( change all improper fractions to mixed numbers)
