Biomes
O: We will summarize our biome notes.
A biome is a region of Earth where the climate determines the types of plants
that live there.
Climate is the main abiotic factor that characterizes a biome.
Abiotic factors affect which organisms can live in a biome.
Plants and animals that live in a biome have adaptations to its unique
conditions.
Tundra is found in the Arctic and in high mountains.
The ground contains permafrost and the biome has
low temperatures and very little precipitation.
The plants have shallow roots and animals migrate
or grow thick fur.
Taiga is found in Canada, Northern Europe and Asia.
Temperatures stay low but there is more precipitation
than the tundra. Taiga trees are coniferous (evergreens)
and animals migrate, hibernate, or go through fur
changes each season.
Also called boreal forest.
Desert biomes are very dry and the soil is either
rocky or sandy. Many are hot during the day and
cold at night. Plants and animals are adapted to
extreme temperatures and can conserve water.
Grasslands have many types of grass but few trees.
Tropical grasslands have high temperatures and
wet and dry seasons.
Temperate grasslands have lower temperatures.
Soils are usually thin. There are grazing animals
that are eaten by predators.
Deciduous forests have moderate precipitation, hot
summers and cold winters. The trees shed their
leaves and go dormant in the winter.
Some animals hibernate, some of the birds migrate
out in winter and others stay year round.
Temperate rainforests have a long, cool rainy
season and a dry summer. Many of the trees are
evergreens and there is a lot of moss. Animals include
owl, shrew, elk and cougars.
Tropical rainforests are located near the equator.
They receive large amounts of rainfall and stay hot
year round. Each layer of the canopy supports
different species.
Freshwater is free of or has very little salt. This
biome can exist in most places on Earth. The
climate and rainfall depends on location.
Plants and animals live on the edges or in the water.
The types of plants and animals also depends on
location.
Marine biomes are saltwater. There are many zones
based on water depth and how much light can enter.
The plants and animals are different in each of these
zones. Coral reefs and kelp beds survive in shallower
water. The majority of sea life is found in the open
ocean.
Deep ocean organisms can usually produce their own
light.
A: The higher the biodiversity, the healthier the ecosystem.
O: We will complete our biome notes.
A: Yes, ecosystems that have more resources typically have a higher
biodiversity.
O: We will look at sustainability and compare biomes and ecoregions.
A: Biomes and ecoregions both have climate conditions that support
certain plant and animal species.
O: We will take a quiz over biomes, biodiversity and sustainability.
A: Yes, I used my notes.
O: We will organize our binders and turn them in for a quiz grade.
A: Learning about different animals.
O: We will complete any missing work.
A: Scientists use models to test theories about things that are too small to see or
too large to test full scale.
