Campus Assault Resources and Education (C.A.R.E.) is the University of
San Diego’s primary effort to provide support, resources and education to
the student community pertaining to sexual assault and sexual exploitation.
Role as Faculty ond Staff
As faculty and staff members, you have contact with a great many students and
are in a position to identify and assist those who may need help. This brochure
is designed to provide you with important information about resources available
to all USD students and how to support students who have been or may be
impacted by sexual assault.
What is Sexual Assault?
Sexual Assault is defined as any unwanted physical contact of a sexual nature
that occurs without the consent of each participant or when a participant is
unable to give consent freely. A person is legally incapable of giving consent if
under 18 years of age; if intoxicated by drugs and/or alcohol; or if
developmentally disabled.
Sexual assault includes rape (such as forced vaginal, anal or oral penetration),
and unwanted touching or kissing for purposes of sexual gratification.
National statistics suggest that during the course of their college careers,
between 20-25% of women and 3% of men will be sexually assaulted or
experience attempted sexual assault.
Helping a Student
A student who has been sexually assaulted may confide in you 15 minutes or 15
years after an attack. When a student tells you they have been assaulted or knows
someone who has been sexually assaulted:
You might be the first person the student tells about the experience, it is crucial that
they feel supported. Let the them express their feelings; listen instead of asking
probing questions. Don't say I would have/wouldn’t have, avoid language that
blames the victim.
Ensure that the student is currently safe. If not, contact Public Safety.
Thank them for sharing this information with you, acknowledge how challenging it
might be to talk about this. Let them know that they are not alone and that what
happened is not their fault.
Know your limits. Let the student know how much support you can provide and that
you don’t have all the answers. You can refer to the back of this brochure to help the
student identify different confidential and non-confidential options but let them make
their own choices, they should decide what to do next.
Encourage your student to contact a C.A.R.E. Advocate or the Counseling Center.
Offer to contact an advocate together or to walk with them to the Counseling Center.
What is a C.A.R.E. Advocate?
A C.A.R.E. Advocate is a specially trained USD staff member that:
Is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to listen and meet with students
that may have been impacted by sexual assault.
Provides support to USD students who may have been
impacted by sexual assault, sexual exploitation, harassment, and/or partner
violence.
Helps answer questions about the multiple processes involved in reporting.
Assists students in determining whether or not they would like to meet with
Public Safety and/or San Diego Police to participate in an investigation.
Provides information about accessing ongoing support and
professional services including information about the:
