The challenge
Acidic scrubbing is needed to efficiently reduce
ammonia to low levels. Sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and
Nitric acid (HNO3) are the most commonly used
acids for this purpose that leads to the formation
of ammonium sulfate or ammonium nitrate salts.
Our Solution
Stamicarbon can offer its customers tailor-made
schemes for reprocessing both ammonium sulfate
(AS) as well as ammonium nitrate (AN) salts
generated during acidic scrubbing processes.
Based on the type of acid applied, the configuration
of the scrubbing system, and how the salt leaves the
plant, different options for reworking are possible.
Ammonium sulfate can be reworked within the
finishing section to a product containing traces
of sulfur, or extra solid ammonium sulfate can be
added (from an external source) to produce sulfurenriched urea.
Ammonium nitrate can be reworked if it can be
fed to a urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) or
ammonium nitrate (AN) plant. With optimal
integration between these plants, no waste streams
need be generated.
How it works
Ammonium sulfate (AS) and ammonium nitrate
(AN) generated in an acidic scrubber can be
handled in such a way that there are no waste
streams to dispose of.
The different reworking possibilities are
based on:
• The type of acid used: sulfuric or nitric acid.
• The type of scrubbing system used: dust
scrubbing can be combined with the acidic
scrubbing, in which case the end solution
contains water, the ammonium salt, and
urea or kept separate, in which case the
solution from the acid scrubber contains
only water and the ammonia salt.
• The phase in which the salt leaves the plant:
liquid or solid (combined with or separated
from the main urea product).

into a higher value sulfur- enriched urea fertilizer.
How
By concentrating the produced ammonium sulfate urea solution and shaping this concentrated
melt into a sulfur containing urea product. In so doing producing liquid urea ammonium sulfate
(UAS) to be recycled in order to have the salt leaving the plant in a solid form.
