Surface Area of Prisms
Example 1 Lateral Area of a Pentagonal Prism
Find the lateral area of the regular pentagonal prism.
The bases are regular pentagons. So the perimeter of one
base is 5(54) or 270 in.
L = Ph
Lateral area of a prism
= (270)(75)
P = 270, h = 75
= 20,250
Multiply.
The lateral area is 20,250 square inches.
Example 2 Surface Area of a Triangular Prism
Find the surface area of the triangular prism.
First, find the measure of the third side of the
triangular base.

Pythagorean Theorem
Substitution
Simplify.
Take the square root of each side.
T = L + 2B
= Ph + 2B
Surface area of a prism

Substitution

Use a calculator.
The surface area is approximately 1977.1 square units.
Example 3 Use Surface Area to Solve a Problem
ENTERTAINMENT The owners of the
Spring Hill Pavilion plan to build a stage
so that they can host concerts. All four
sides of the stage will be enclosed as
shown. Find the surface area of the
entire structure.
The stage is shaped like a rectangular prism. Since the bottom of the stage is sitting on the ground, the
surface area of the structure includes only the top and the four sides. Find the lateral area and then add the
area of one base. The perimeter of a base is 2(50) + 2(35) or 170 feet. The area of the base is 50(35) or
1750 square feet.
T =L+B
= (170)(5) + 1750
= 2600
Formula for surface area
P = 170, h = 5, and B = 1750
Simplify.
The total area of the stage is 2600 square feet.
