Spelling Activities
1. Air Spelling: choose a spelling word. With your index finger, you will spell
the word in the air and say the letters aloud. They must be able to “see”
the letters as they are written in the air.
2. Scramble Spelling: Give the kids the list of spelling words, but scramble
them up! As they get better...give them a time limit to see if they can beat
their time.
3. Spelling Poems: Since some of the words have a common sound (short a,
etc) create a rhyming poem.
4. Spelling Story: Create a weekly story with an illustration.
5. Newspaper Spelling: Give the kids a newspaper or magazine and have
them highlight their spelling words.
6. ABC Order: Practice putting the words in alphabetical order.
7. Rainbow Words: Write the words/letters in the color of the rainbow.
8. Silly Sentences: Write silly sentences that start with a common letter using your words.
9. Scrambled Words: Scramble the letters and have your kids unscramble
them to make the spelling word.
10. Delicious Words: Write your words in whipped cream, peanut butter, or
anything else in the kitchen!
11. Clean Words: Write your spelling words using shaving cream. Tip: Buy a
plastic shoe box to put the shaving cream in!
12. Dirty Words: Write your words in the mud or sand.
13. Pasta Words: Write your words using alphabet pasta or break spaghetti
noodles and form letters to spell your words.
14. Cheer your words: Pretend you’re a cheerleader...even use pom-poms!
Cheer your words!
15. Use Silly String, an Etch-A-Sketch, or Popsicle sticks to write out your
words. THE POSSIBLILITIES ARE ENDLESS! MAKE IT FUN!!!
