Graduate Research Photo Competition
Do you have a photo that captures your graduate research?
Enter the FGS/GSA photo competition to win an award and a chance to have your
photo permanently displayed in the FGS/GSA offices in the MacKimmie Tower
and the Last Defence Lounge.
COMPETITION AWARD
First place will receive $500, second place will receive $300 and third place will receive $100. Photos will
also be displayed online and will be open to a People’s Choice vote. The winner of the People’s Choice
Award, occurring from January 2nd-21st, will receive $100 gift certificate from the UCalgary Bookstore.
There will also be two Honourable Mentions with no cash prizes. In addition, the winning photos will be
professionally framed and displayed in the FGS and GSA offices in the MacKimmie Library Tower.
COMPETITION RULES AND REGULATIONS
The contest is open to all UCalgary Graduate Students. To be considered in the contest, all submissions
must be:
Original, unpublished photographs
Taken by the student submitting the photo
Digital, high resolution photographs in JPEG format
Able to be printed as 11x14 prints
Students can submit a maximum of one photo. In addition to your photo submission, please supply a
PDF files which includes your name, degree sought, program and a brief abstract of between 150 and
250 words about how your image captures your research project. Judges will base their decisions on
image quality, originality, and relationship to the project.
Call for Submissions:
Photos submitted as part of the Graduate Research Photo Competition must be in a jpeg file
format, and must be able to be printed as an 11 X 14 image. Images submitted must also be
taken by the student making the submission, and have a description/caption with a maximum of
250 words. The photo competition will be publicized through FGS and GSA newsletters, social
media, as well as other forms of media deemed appropriate.

Abstract/Link between photo and research
People’s Choice Award:
Photos entered into the Graduate Research Photo Competition will be publicized on the FGS
Facebook page along with their descriptions/captions. Graduate students will be invited via
newsletters, social media, and other appropriate media to vote for their r photo. Voting will
occur via “Likes”, and the photo with the most “Likes” after the duration of the competition will
be declared the winner of the People’s Choice Award. The winner will be awarded with a gift
certificate from the UCalgary Bookstore, and their photo will be framed for display.
Winners:
Contestants who come in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place will receive awards. The winner of the People’s
Choice will receive a gift certificate to the UCalgary bookstore. There will be a total of $900
distributed across contestants placing 1st-3rd, this award will be distributed through the FGS
scholarship office. The gift certificate for the People’s Choice winner will be distributed through
the GSA. All photos submitted by competition winners will be framed for display, in addition, we
will be picking two more photos entered into the competition be displayed as well.
Awards Ceremony:
During the awards ceremony, competition winners will be revealed, and awards/certificates will
be presented.
Award Ceremony Follow-Up:
After the Graduate Research Photo Competition, FGS and GSA will contact all contestants via
email informing them whether they won or not, and thanking them for their participation.
Results will be publicized in the GSA newsletter, and the winning photos will be distributed
between FGS and GSA offices and the Last Defence Lounge. The winning photos will also be
publicized in a UToday article in February. Any remaining certificates after the award ceremony
will be held at the GSA office and remain available for pick up at later date.
WAIVER
While you have copyright to use your photo for your own research, the submission of photo in the
contest permits FGS and GSA the right to display your images in other media (e.g. website, social media).
However, these images will not be used for marketing purposes.
