VISIT BARROW-IN-FURNESS has a rich heritage and a proud tradition for World Leading Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Excellence. The sector has a significant concentration in the Furness Peninsula. Investment proposals from major international blue-chip companies are set to create 3,000 jobs in the Barrow and Ulverston area. Between 2015 and 2022, in the wider Cumbria area, huge investments collectively worth circa £45 billion, including £6.6bn of new infrastructure will commence. Over the next seven years around £1bn of investment will be made in advanced manufacturing companies in the Furness area of Cumbria; £300m plus investment in new buildings, processes and infrastructure for delivery of the Successor programme by BAE Submarine Solutions in Barrow and £350m in a new bio pharmaceutical plant by Glaxo Smith Kline in Ulverston are the most significant investments. These are complemented by investments in Siemens, Centrica and other companies. Walney Extension Offshore Wind Farm is currently in the development phase with offshore construction expected to commence in 2016. Walney Extension Offshore Wind Farm is located in the Irish Sea approximately 19km from the Walney Island coast. The Project is 100% owned by DONG Energy Walney Extension (UK) Ltd and situated next to the existing Walney Offshore Wind Farm. The extension will comprise of up to 90 turbines and have a total capacity of up to 660MW. WORK LIVE In addition to the direct jobs, it is estimated that up to £2.2 million of Gross Value Added will be generated in the regional economy each year. The wind farm is expected to be the world’s largest offshore installed capacity when inaugurated in 2019. Up to 90 turbines of 7MW to 8MW each will be deployed. A 7MW turbine at a height of 190m is 32m taller than the Blackpool Tower and a 8MW turbine at a height of 222m is 64m taller than the Blackpool Tower. DONG Energy has committed to putting in place a discretionary Community Benefit Fund to support the local communities and make a long lasting contribution to the area surrounding the Offshore Wind Farm. In June 2015 National Grid selected a corridor running overland around the coast of Cumbria and under Morecambe Bay for connecting new sources of electricity generation into ‘the grid’. The route heads south from Moorside to the Furness peninsula where it goes under Morecambe Bay to emerge at Middleton substation near Heysham, in Lancashire. The connection will link new sources of electricity including the proposed new nuclear power station at Moorside into ‘the grid’ in Cumbria and Lancashire. The main construction phase is expected to be from 2016 to 2019 and could create over 200 new jobs in the North West or 500 jobs throughout the UK. It is estimated that during the operation and maintenance phase around 200 new full time jobs regionally, and over 350 across the UK, will be created. 19
