 The branch of geography dealing with how human
activity affects or is influenced by the earth's surface.
“How people CHANGE (good or bad) the Earth
and how the Earth changes people.”
THE 5 THEMES OF
GEOGRAPHY
The 5 Themes of Geography
 Location
 Place
 Human-environment interaction
 Movement
 Region
Bellwork 8/20 or 8/21 (Page 7 of NB)
 Why is it important to know what a place is like?
(1 or 2 reasons)

Location
 Location-The position of objects like the continents
and the ocean.
Parts of Location
 Relative location-One object’s location in relation to
another object. Nebraska is west of Iowa, or where
your house is from McDonalds.
Parts of Location Continued
 Absolute location-Exact coordinates using latitude and
longitude, OR an address
1. LOCATION:
Where is it? Why is it located there?
 Absolute
 Relative
Location

Location
Is given in degrees of
latitude and longitude
(global location) or a
street address (local
location).
o
Paris, France is 48
North Latitude and 2o
East Longitude.
 The White House is
located at 1600
Pennsylvania
Ave.



Relative location depends
upon point of reference.
Eg. Near, far, a short
drive.
Described by landmarks,
time, direction or
distance. From one place
to another.
Bellwork 8/24 or 8/25 (Page 7 of NB)
 Name 2-3 Human Characteristics of Omaha.
(important/well known places or things)
Page 3 of NB
Place
 Place-is used to describe the physical and human
characteristics of a location.
2. PLACE: What is it like?
 Physical Characteristics

Landforms (mountains, plains, etc.), bodies of water
(oceans, lakes, bays, etc.), ecosystems (soil, plants,
animals, and climate)
2. PLACE: What is it like?
 Human Characteristics
Bridges, roads, buildings, culture, languages, beliefs.
 All places have features that distinguish them from other
places.


Human-Environment Interaction
 Human-environment interaction-Studies the way
humans impact the environment.
 Humans depend on the environment.
 Humans change the environment.
 Humans adapt to the environment.
3. HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION
 How do people interact with and change their
environment?

We depend on the environment.


We adapt to the environment.


Ex. People depend on rivers for water and
transportation.
Ex. We adapt to the environment by wearing
clothing suitable for summer (shorts) and
winter (coats), rain and shine.
We modify the environment.

Ex. People modify their environment by
heating and cooling buildings for comfort.
Bellwork 8/26 or 8/27 (Page 7 of NB)
 Name 3 ways people get into, out of, and around
Omaha.
(Only 1 may be a type of vehicle)
Page 5 of NB
Movement
 Movement-How people move goods and ideas. Could
be migration of people or trends.
4. MOVEMENT
 How are people and places linked by
communication and the flow of people, products
and information/ideas?
Movement of People
 Cars, Trucks, Trains, Planes
 Movement of Products
 Cars, Trucks, Trains, Planes
 Movement of Information/ideas
 Phones, computer (email), mail
 TV, Radio, Magazines

Page 6 of NB
Regions
 Formal Regions
Have boundaries
like states and
countries.
 Functional Regions-Determined by connections, like
the delivery area of a pizza place.
5. REGIONS
 What are regions
and how are they
useful?
Regions can be
defined on the basis
of physical and
human
characteristics
 Geographers divide
the world into
regions to help them
interpret
information.

 Vernacular Regions-Have no formal boundaries like
“the Midwest”.
Bellwork 8/28 or 8/31 (Page 9 of NB)
 How do immigrants (people who move into an area)
change a Place? (at least 2 ideas)
