Parts of Speech
There are 8 parts of Speech
1. Noun – word that names a person, a place, a thing, an idea
a. Ex: person-Mrs. Yanez, Mrs. Gonzalez
i. Proper nouns- Mary, John
ii. Common nouns-boy, girl
b. Place-mall, school, house
c. Thing-Ipod, cell phone,
d. Idea-going to college, plan to go to Montwood
2. Verb- a word that expresses action or otherwise helps to
make a statement
a. Action verb – doing something
i. Example: eating, drinking, crying, laughing
b. Linking verb – connects ideas subject to description
* Every sentence must have a verb.
Kinds of verbs:

Action Verbs: express mental or physical
action
Ex: He rode the horse to victory.
Linking verb: makes a statement by
connecting the subject with a word that
describes or explains it.
Ex: He has been sick.
o Ex: can be
Ex: Have you been sitting in my chair? Action

Other can be graceful. Linking
3. Pronoun – a word used in place of one or more nouns. It may
stand for a person, place, thing, or idea
a. Personal pronouns: I, me, we, us, myself, yourself,
yours, hers, ours

4. Adjective – modifies or describes a noun or pronoun
Example: Did you lose your address book? (Which?)
Is that a wool sweater? (What kind?)
We went there. (Where?)
Just give me five minutes. (How many?)
5. Adverb – modifies or describes a verb, an adjective, or another
adverb.
Examples:
Answer the questions
He ran quickly.
How?
She left yesterday.
When?
We went there.
Where?
It was too hot!

7. The conjunction – is a word that joins words or a group of
