Welcome to Zimbabwe!!! If you're looking for a quality elective attachment, then consider your search over. Come and join over a
thousand medical students for the best hands-on attachment guaranteed!!
OVERVIEW
Zimbabwe is a landlocked country in Southern Africa known for its dramatic landscapes and diverse wildlife. We have a tropical
climate and so have perfect weather all year round. Most of our country is savannah, but don't worry though, there aren't any lions
just roaming around!
Our history is culturally, politically and economically rich with much emphasis on the rise and fall of empires that came together to
build our great nation. In terms of industry, we have always been a farming nation (which earned us the nickname: The bread
basket of Africa). We have many different cultures dominated by the Shona and Ndebele ethnic groups.
From Zambezi to Limpopo, the tourism sector will not leave you wanting. Home to one of the nine wonders of the world, the Victoria
Falls; as well as the culturally profound Great Zimbabwe and the big five at Hwange National Park (to name but a few) our beautiful
country will not dissapoint.
HEALTH CARE SYSTEM
In Zimbabwe, the public healthcare system remains the largest provider of health care services, complemented by Mission
hospitals, health care delivered by non governmental organisations and a fast growing private sector.
Zimbabweans continue to experience a heavy burden of disease due to infectious illness such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis,
diarrhoeal disease and other vaccine-preventable diseases, as well as health related issues affecting pregnant women and
neonates. however, the incidence of non-communicable diseases has been on the rise.
The healthcare system faces many challenges including shortage of skilled professionals as well as an eroded infrastructure with ill
equiped hospitals. the introduction of user fees has also been a major barrier to accessing basic health care for most of the
vulnerable populations in Zimbabwe. However, several policies and recovery plans are being implemented to address some of the
challenges being faced in the health sector.
MEDICAL EDUCATION
At the moment, there are two medical universities in Zimbabwe, one at the College of Health Sciences of the University of
Zimbabwe in Harare ( which is the oldest founded in 1963) and one in Bulawayo at the National University of Science and
Technology.
At present, there are more than 1200 medical students in training. The program is spread over five years, the first two years being
pre-clinical with some introduction to clinical courses, and the remaining three years being devoted to clinical studies.
TRANSPORTATION
The main mode of transport is by road, with taxis making up most of the public transport.
SOCIAL PROGRAM
An amazing social program awaits you, including seeing the sites around Harare and partaking in the various social events
Zimbabwe has to offer. We will offer one activity for free and students will have to cater for the cost of the rest on their own therefore
participatuion is totally your own decision.

while to check them out!!! Here is a short list
