• Honors)Discuss 3 events that shattered the
nation’s unity and led to the Civil War. For
each, explain what the event was, how the
North reacted, how the South reacted, and how
this pushed the nation towards war.
•States’ Rights- the reason for the war. The question was did states have the right to leaves since it was
not discussed in the Constitution
•Secession- to leave the Union. South Carolina was the 1st to leave
•Ft. Sumter- 1st shots of the war were fired here. Bloodless victory for the South.
•Border States- Mo, KY, W.Va, MD, DEL, slave states that stayed in the Union. Created a buffer zone
between the free states and the Confederate States
•Anaconda Plan- Union’s plan for conquering the South
1. Blockade the ports of the South
2. Control the Mississippi River
3. Capture Richmond
•Battle of Bull Run – Describe and tell what Bull Run suggested about the war to come.
1st major battle of the War won by the South, nothing stands between them and D.C but unorganized
and can not follow up. Shows that the war will be a long and bloody affair
•Copperheads- Northern Peace Democrats who wanted to stop the war any way possible
•Clara Barton- founded the Red Cross
•Battle of Antietam- Lee invaded the North with several goals on mind, the 3 day battle ends in a draw
but Lee retreats south so it is called a Union Victory
Goals
1. hoped victory in North might force Lincoln into peace talks
2. invasion would give Southern farmers a chance to harvest their crops
3. Confederates could plunder from Northern farms for food
4. if they cold get a win in the North it might bring England and France in on the side of
the Confederacy
• Explain why more soldiers die in the medical tents than on the battlefields
disease and infection were the biggest killers
•Describe life in a military camp.
Monotonous periods filled with drill then moments of terror in battle, placed men together who
had never been around this many people sickness breaks out in the camps daily
•Why did General Lee invade the North? Include at least two reasons. See Antietam
•Why was control of the Mississippi River so important?
It split the Confederates in 2 and was their name supply route

North: Population, Factories, RR, Navy, established economy
•Identify 3 disadvantages for the North and 3 disadvantages for the South. Explain how these
disadvantages affected their ability to wage a successful war.
South: small population, few factories, few RR, no navy, weak economy
North: offensive war, had to invade, few good leaders
•Many technologies influenced the outcome of the Civil War. Explain what ironclads and minie
balls were and why they were important.
Ironclads- ship that were covered with iron, shots bounced off. Made every wooden
naval ship obsolete
Minie Ball- new bullet design that was much more accurate then the lead ball. Made the tactics of
mass volley fire and lined men a death trap

.
Railroads- used by the Union to move troops and goods quickly to where they were needed
Telegraphs- used to get information quickly to where it was needed
