English From the Roots Up :: Greek and Latin root words and their meanings Students should know the meaning of the root word and should be able to explain what a derivation means based on the two root words used to make the word. For example, if given “telephoto”, students should be able to explain it means light from far away and if given “seeing light from far away”, students should be able to say it must be tele + photo. We will ONLY use these five root words in the quiz. The quiz will be given immediately after the spelling test on Friday. photos – Greek – light (photograph – to draw using light) graph – Greek – write, draw (photograph – to draw using light) tele – Greek – far away (telephone – sound from far away) metron – Greek – measure (geometry – [geo – earth] measure the earth) tropos – Greek – turn (phototropic – turning toward light as flowers do) English From the Roots Up :: Greek and Latin root words and their meanings Students should know the meaning of the root word and should be able to explain what a derivation means based on the two root words used to make the word.
