Describe Dalton’s theory of the structure of matter. This means I can explain the main points of Dalton’s theory including
(1) all elements are composed of atoms, (2) all atoms of the same element have the same mass, (3) compounds contain
more than one element, and (4) in particular compounds, atoms of different elements combine in the same way.
2.
Describe the contributions of Thomson to the development of atomic theory. This means I can explain how Thomson
provided the first evidence that atoms are made of smaller particles.
3.
Describe the contributions of Rutherford to the development of atomic theory. This means I can explain how Rutherford
discovered the existence of the nucleus.
4.
Name and describe the three subatomic particles of an atom. This means I know what protons, neutrons, & electrons are
and where each is located inside an atom.
5.
Explain how atoms of one element are different from atoms of other elements. This means I can define the term atomic
mass and use it to classify elements.
6.
Explain what an isotope is and tell the difference between two isotopes of the same element. This means I can explain
how elements with the same atomic number, but different numbers of neutrons, are called isotopes.
7.
Describe the contributions of Bohr to the development of the atomic theory. This means I can explain how Bohr
developed an atomic model showing the electrons orbiting the nucleus.
8.
Describe the electron cloud model. This means I can explain how Bohr’s model was modified to better represent the
movement of electrons around the nucleus.
