Number Line A
Use Number Line A to complete the problems below.
A. Natural Numbers ─Counting numbers {1, 2, 3, ,}.
• Underline the natural numbers on Number Line A in green.
B. Whole Numbers ─Natural numbers and zero
• Underline the whole numbers on Number Line A in blue.
C. Positive Integers ─Positive whole numbers {1, 2, 3, ,}.
• Circle the positive integers on Number Line A in green.
D. Negative Integers ─Opposites of the positive whole numbers {,, −3, −2, −1}.
• Circle the negative integers on Number Line A in red.
E. Integers ─Positive whole numbers, their opposites, and zero {,, −3, −2, −1, 0, 1, 2, 3, ,}.
• Circle the integers on Number Line A in blue.
Write the integer that would best represent each situation below:
1) The outside temperature at 8:00 A.M. was 75° Fahrenheit. By 11:15 A.M. the temperature had
risen 15 degrees. Which integer represents this change in temperature?
2) Julie spent $150 on new clothes. She bought the clothes with cash. Julie received $50 in
change. Which integer represents the amount of money Julie spent on clothes? Which integer
represents the change Julie received?
3) Johnny was standing on a set of stairs and dropped his pen. He went down two steps to retrieve
his pen. Which integer represents this change in steps?

Integer Explanation
Most of the numbers we have seen so far have been greater than or equal to 0. The set of whole
numbers are described using the numbers: {0, 1, 2, 3, 4, ...}. Positive whole numbers may also be
referred to as positive integers. We are now going to represent and use numbers less than zero.
We will investigate negative integers. The “opposite” of positive whole numbers may also be
referred to as negative integers since they are located on the opposite side of zero as the positive
whole numbers. Zero is a whole number, but it is not classified as negative or positive.

Negative integers are used to represent values below zero. These numbers are always shown
with a negative (−) sign.
Positive integers may or may not have a positive (+) sign.
The positive whole numbers {1, 2, 3,}, their opposites {,, −3, −2, −1}, and zero {0} are known
as integers {,, −3, −2, −1, 0, 1, 2, 3, ,}.
On a number line, the further to the right a number is, the greater it is. The further to the left it is,
the less it is.
The number line below shows both positive and negative integers and zero.
Write an integer that describes each situation for problems 1-3. Justify your response.
4) A deposit of $25.
5) You have used 100 minutes 6) You bought a CD for $14.
of your monthly text
message minutes.
Write a real-world situation that may be represented by the given integer.
7) −15
8) 2,000
9) −305
