How can competitive sports
harm your body?
By Ana Worthington
Overuse injuries
• Year round sports players who don’t give injuries
proper recovery time
• Key Concept- Swelling:
– Body’s first step toward healing
– Movement of fluid and white blood cells to injured
area
– Edema- fluid that has accumulated outside joint
capsule
– Effusion- fluid accumulated inside joint capsule
– Red and hot- from increase blood flow
Tendonitis
• Tendons (thick fibrous cord that attaches muscle
to bone) can fray like rope with repetitive motion
and tendon change causes inflammatory
response.
• Most common: shoulder, elbow, wrists, knees,
heels
• Symptoms: pain, rash, swelling
• Diagnosis: creaky sound when moving tendon
(tendon sheath has become thicker: irritation
caused fibrous tissues to form), imaging tests
reveal swelling
Chondromalacia patellae (runners
knee)
• Key Concept: Kneecap sits in patella groove at the front of the knee
on the femur and is lined with very thick cartilage for smooth
movement.
Causes: patella cannot move correctly and causes extra stress on
cartilage
- muscle weakness = more weight on patella
– muscle is weak or tight on one side = cause patella to shift and create
friction
– foot positioning = knees roll forward and increase pressure on patella
– Anatomy = issue with patella groove and cause friction
Symptoms: pain around knee (especially when running, lunging, stairs)
Treatments: Strengthening muscles (quad) that will take relieve stress
from patella, stretches to reduce muscle tightness
