Body Systems and Integumentary System Study Guide: Test: Monday May 3, 2010 **Please study your homework: DRW’s, review questions, and VOCABULARY. A lot of what is on the test are contained in these materials.** Homeostasis: the maintenance of a stable internal environment. Tissue: a group of similar cells working together. Tissue Function Epithelial Tissue Covers and protects underlying tissue. Nervous Tissue Sends electrical signals through the body. Muscle Tissue Made of cells that can contract and relax to produce movement. Connective Tissue Joins, supports, protects, insulates, nourishes, and cushions organs. Also keeps them from falling apart. Organ: two or more tissues working together. Remember: The body is organized into cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems. Cells make up tissue; two or more tissues make up an organ, organs work together to form an organ system. Your body has ELEVEN major systems that carry out functions in your body: ORGAN SYSTEM FUNCTIONS Integumentary System SKIN, HAIR, and NAILS protect underlying tissue. Muscular System Skeletal muscles move your bones. Skeletal System Bones provide a frame to support and protect your body parts. Cardiovascular System Heart pumps blood through all your blood vessels. Nervous System Receive and send electrical messages throughout the body. Lymphatic System Returns leaked fluids to blood vessels and gets rid of germs. Digestive System Breaks down food you eat into nutrients that can be absorbed. Endocrine System Glands regulate body functions by sending out chemical messengers. Respiratory System Lungs absorb oxygen and release carbon dioxide. Urinary System Removes wastes from the blood and regulates the body’s fluids. Reproductive System (MALE) Produces and delivers sperm. Reproductive System (FEMALE) Produces eggs and nourishes and shelters the unborn baby. **Integumentary System: Your hair, skin, and nails. Integumentary= COVERING Your hair and nails do NOT contain nerves, but the hair follicle and nail root do contain nerves. This is why it does not hurt when you cut your hair/nails. Sweat Glands: small organs in your skin that produce sweat. Pimples form by an infection in your skin—caused by hair follicles clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. ** Melanin: a darkening chemical in your skin that determines skin color. Skin varies from person to person because of the different amounts of melanin in the skin. Epidermis: the outermost layer of the skin. Dermis: the deeper, thicker layer of the skin. Hair Follicle: a small organ in the dermis layer of the skin that produces hair. **KNOW the diagram of SKIN and where each structure is located: epidermis, dermis, hair follicle, oil gland, blood vessel
