SIMPLIFIED PHOTOSYNTHESIS
Biology I
PHOTOSYNTHESIS EQUATION
light
6CO2 + 6H2O -------→ C6H12O6 + 6O2
light
Carbon dioxide + water -------→ sugar + oxygen

Photosynthesis uses the energy of sunlight to
convert water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and
high-energy sugar.
PHOTOSYNTHESIS

Happens in two parts
Light Reactions- happen in the thylakiod
Dark Reactions or Calvin Cycle- happen in the
stroma

Light hits the chloroplast.
The electrons in that chloroplast become
excited.
These electrons move thru the electron
transport chain.
Water will split into Hydrogen and Oxygen.
(Oxygen will be released)
As that happens, NADP
NADPH.
H+ ions are also moving from the stroma into
the thylakoid. This make the inside of the
thylakoid positive and the outside negative.
H+ ions are also passing thru ATP Synthase (
an enzyme) and changing ADP
ATP
LIGHT REACTIONS - PRODUCTS
Oxygen- released from the plant
ATP- goes into the Calvin Cycle
NADPH- goes into the Calvin Cycle
DARK REACTIONS OR CALVIN CYCLE
The ATP and NADPH made during light
reaction, along with CO2, will be used to create
one glucose molecule.
 Product- Glucose

PHOTOSYNTHESIS



In plants photosynthesis takes place inside the
chloroplasts. (plate)
Chloroplasts contain saclike photosynthetic
membranes called thylakoids. This is where the
Light Reactions take place. (pancake)
Thylakoids are arranged in stacks known as
grana(plural) or granum(singular). (stack or stacks
of pancake)
The Calvin cycle or Dark Reaction takes place in
the stroma, the region outside the thylakoid
membranes. (syrup surrounding the pancakes)
