Properties of Waves
 Waves
get their energy from a source of
vibration or disturbance.
 Transverse
– wave on a rope
 Longitudinal
– “compression” wave on a
slinky.
 Surface
– wave on the surface of water
 The
wave causes the ship to move up and
down.
 Because
we are dealing with a surface
wave the ship also moves in a circular
motion. (a combination of longitudinal
and transverse waves)
 Transverse
– waves along the surface of
the pavement perpendicular to the force
of the jackhammer.
 Longitudinal
– “compression” waves that
travel into the ground in the same
direction of the force of the jackhammer.
 Amplitude–
distance from rest position to crest
or trough.
 wavelength–
distance from crest to crest or
trough to trough.
 Frequency
– number of waves that pass a
given point each second.
 Speed
– distance traveled in a given time.

Two waves can have the same
frequency but different amounts of energy.
 Use
the frequency formula to see what
happens. Substitute numbers for the
speed and wavelength and find its affect
on the frequency.
