Setting the Stage for the
Renaissance
The Middle Ages occurred after the fall of
Rome in 476 AD and continued until the
beginning of the Renaissance in 1350.
 Middle Ages were known as the Dark Ages
because of the lack of learning and
scholarship.
 Middle Ages were dominated by the
Feudal System, and Monarchies.


Middle Ages Continued

Everyday way of life dominated by Roman
Catholic Church.
Church taught Christians to endure suffering
while awaiting rewards in heaven.
 Serfs worked the land, ate horrible food, wore
itchy rough clothes so they could be happy in
the afterlife.
 Suffering = Salvation


of serfs in the middle ages
Crusades
Crusades- religiously sanctioned wars to
take back the Holy Land.
 Pope Urban II called upon all Christians to
fight for the Holy Land promising those
who died entrance into Heaven.
 In terms of conquering Holy Land,
crusades unsuccessful.

Effects of the Crusades
Failed to conquer Holy Lands in the long
run.
 Cross cultural interactions created trade
routes that made Italy wealthy

Bubonic Plague
Also known as the “Black Death.”
 From 1347-1350 the bubonic plague killed
almost half of Europe's population.
 Caused by fleas on rats traveling along
trade routes from Asia to Europe.
 Europe largely urbanized by this point
causing plague to be more devastating.


Depopulation and Urbanization

After the plague there were less serfs and people to
work the land, this lead to an increase in urbanization.




Because serfs were being paid for their labor they
experienced upward mobility and were able to move to the
city.
With money comes leisure time, an increase in leisure time
allowed people to invest in art and learning
City life led to an exchange of ideas and contributed to the
start of the Renaissance
More money = more leisure time = learning and interest in
the arts

Legacies of Greece and Rome
The classic writings of Greece and Rome had
been preserved in monasteries for centuries.
 Remains of the Roman Empire lay all over
Italy further inspiring the residence.
 People wanted to build on classic culture of
Romans and Greeks while creating something
new.


Women.
 Then complete the analyzing primary
