CHAPTER 8 – CARBONS – page #323
1a. What are the four main classes or
organic compounds required by living
things?
1a. Carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids
1b. To what class of organic compounds
does each of the following belong: glucose,
RNA, cholesterol, cellulose and oil?
1b. Glucose and cellulose = carbohydrates
RNA = nucleic acid
Cholesterol and oil = lipids
1c. How is each class of organic compounds
used by the body?
1c. Carbohydrates – provides body with energy, keeps digestive
system healthy
Proteins – building blocks and repair for body parts (esp. cells)
Lipids – provide energy, build cell structures, form compounds that
serve as chemical messengers.
Nucleic acids – direct production of proteins from amino acids,
which determine differences among living organisms
1d. Compare the building blocks found in
complex carbohydrates with those found in
proteins.
1d. Complex carbohydrates are built from sugars. Proteins are built
from amino acids.
2a. What nutrients help support the
functioning of large molecules in organisms?
2a. Water, vitamins, minerals, and salts help support large molecule
functioning in organisms.
2b. Why does your body need water to
survive?
2b. Water in the blood helps carry nutrients to and wastes away
from cells. Many chemical reactions, such as breakdown of
nutrients, take place in water.
