3 Types of Cancers
Breast Cancer
Cervical Cancer
Ovarian Cancer
Breast Cancer
Most common
2nd leading cause of death for females
*2008: 182,640 women; 1900 men*
2/3 cases occur in women over 50
Risks:
A woman’s risk doubles if she has a first relative with breast
cancer (Mother, Sister, and/or Daughter)
Symptoms:
Change in breast or nipple appearance
Lump/swelling in breast (90% of lumps are detected by women
Detected: Mammogram (x-ray of the breasts)
Treatment: Most treatable and curable when detected early
Breast Self-Examination
Cervical Cancer
What is it?
Abnormal cells in the cervix and surrounding areas
Symptoms?
None
Detection?
Pap Smear – Done every year from age 18 or sooner if sexually
active
Risk Factors?
Being 20-30 yrs. old, never having a pap, having sex at an early
age, and/or having multiple sex partners
Treatment?
Remove all parts of cervix and surrounding areas.
Radiation or chemotherapy – drugs to kill cancer cells
Hysterectomy
*Will a woman with cervical
cancer be able to have
children?
Is Cervical Cancer related to HPV?
Human Papillomavirus
HPV is an STD
Shared amongst sex
partners unknowingly
May be infected for years
and never know
Pap Test finds abnormal
cells
Abnormal cells can be
treated before they turn
cancerous!!!
Ovarian Cancer -- 25,000/year

Stomach discomfort, pelvic pressure and pain
Long Term Symptoms:
Deepened voice and unusual growth of hair, unexplained
weight loss and painful intercourse
****Unfortunately, by the time any symptoms are noticed,
the disease is quite advanced!!!
Risks:
Family history – 2 or more female family members
