Title or Proposal: United States Institute for Theatre Technology Conference
Faculty member: Bill Brewer
Proposal:
This proposal to the CVPA Research committee if granted, will help to
partially fund my attendance and participation at the United States Institute for Theatre
Technology (USITT) conference 2006 in Louisville Kentucky, March 27-April 1.
Attendance and participation at this conference gives me as a Designer and
Teacher the unique opportunity to be involved in an international network of
Professional theatrical artists.
I am involved in many aspects of the conference including:
A. Chairing a session on “Conception and Creation of Theatrical Wigs from
Alternative Materials.” I will head a panel of professionals from the United States and
Canada who will present research and techniques used in the specialized area of design
and construction. I have been selected by the institute to head this presentation as a result
of my previous research in the field.
B. By invitation, I will be presenting a poster session of my new and innovative work in
“fosshape millinery” Fosshape is a relatively new product developed by the Dazian
Company however not specifically intended for this type of application. I have
conducted workshops on fosshape millinery at the University of Central Florida and at
North Carolina School of the Arts and am arguably considered an expert in this area of
study. My poster presentation last year, in part funded by this committee was
attended by over 250 professionals.
C. My costume designs for Still Life with Iris by Steven Deitz, for which I received a
Kennedy Center citation for “Excellence in Design”, will be exhibited in Design Expo
2006. Design Expo is a juried exhibition from which the best designs are selected for
publication in Theatre Design and Technology (TD&T) and also become eligible for
inclusion in the United States exhibit at the Prague Quadrennial 2007. (Please see
supportive materials for explanation of the Prague Quadrennial) My work has been
selected for publication in 2002 and 2004 and was included in the Prague Quadrennial
2003.
D. I have accepted an appointment by the Institute to the USA/PQ 2007 Staff as one of
two Costume Curators for the United States Exhibit. We will be having several meetings
during the conference regarding the United States exhibit in Prague.
E. In addition I will be attending numerous sessions and professional development
workshops all of which enhance my professional development and my effectiveness as
both a teacher and a mentor.
