The Stat Menu
• We will use the STAT key
to access the statistical
functions of the calculator.
• Locate the STAT key on
your calculator.
• Also locate L1.
• The TI-84 has more
memory and runs faster.
• All instructions for a TI-84
will work for a TI-83
Example
• In question 4 of the additional exercises, we are given the
following information regarding the end-of-the-month gold
prices for the year 2003.
• Press 2ND 1 to access
list1.
• We need to enter this data into the calculator.
• Press the STAT key.
• Choose EDIT by pressing
ENTER.
• Enter the data into the L1
column
• You may need to clear out
old data. Press the up arrow
to highlight L1, then press
CLEAR and ENTER.
• Continue until all 12
numbers are entered.
• Press the STAT key
again. Choose CALC.
• Choose 1:1-Var Stats.
• Press 2ND 1 and then
ENTER.
• Enter 225 on the first line
and press ENTER.

• x gives the mean.
• Sx gives the standard deviation if
the data is a sample.
• σ x gives the standard deviation if
the data is a population.
• n gives the number of
observations.
• Press the down key repeatedly to
see the rest of the output.
• The next 5 numbers give the 5number summary: minimum, 1st
quartile, median, 3rd quartile, and
maximum.
