Types of Imperialism
• Settlement colonies– Large groups of people from one
country living together in a new
country or territory.
Examples of Settlement
colonies
– Australia
• In 1788, 11 ships
containing around
1350 people from
Great Britain
arrived in
Australia.
Dependent Colonies
• A few European officials ruling over the
non-European inhabitants.
– Example India
• Great Britain had been trading through British
East India Co. since 1600’s.
• In 1757 the Br. East India Co. defeated a
weakened Mughal Empire at the battle of Plessey
• In 1858 British gov’t. took direct command of
India due to Sepoy uprising and ruled until 1947.
Protectorates
• Territories where local rulers kept
their title, and handled domestic
affairs, but the Europeans
controlled all foreign policy and
had a large military presence in
the area.
Examples of Protectorates
• Afghanistan- British controlled until
1919. Why? Strategic position to help
protect interests in India.
• Morocco-French granted control by
besieged Sultan, whose people turned
against him and fought for
independence. Why? To expand their
territory in North Africa.

• An area in which one nation has a
special interest. Legal agreements
made between nations promised to
not interfere with each other’s
actions in these spheres of
influence.
