Benefits of Exercise
Lesson Objectives
1.To describe some of the effects
of exercise on the body.
2.To understand the link
between physical activity levels
and the energy requirements
of the body.
Benefits to the Heart
• Increase in heart muscle.
• More powerful heart beat.
• More blood pumped
around the body.
• Reduced blood pressure.
• Decrease in resting heart
Rate.
Pulse rate
Healthy adults pulse rate =
60-80 beats per minute.
( infants and children can be much faster )
HIGHER than usual : exercise, panic
attack, anxiety or a heart disorder.
WEAKER than usual :low blood
pressure, shock or a heart disorder.
Benefits to the lungs:
• Better oxygen
uptake
• Bigger lung
volume
Muscular:
• Bigger
muscles
• Muscles
store more
energy.
Other Benefits:
• Weight loss
• Better Immune
system
• Reduced risk of heart
disease, heart
attacks and strokes.
• Psychological
benefits.
When does the body need to release more
energy?
not very active
= low energy
requirements
very active
= high energy
requirements
During which type of activities is the
rate of aerobic respiration higher?
Effect of Exercise on the Body
• Muscles are made of protein fibres.
• Muscle fibres need a lot of energy to
contract.
• Energy is released by aerobic
respiration.

Pulse Rate Experiment
1. Measure your resting pulse rate. This is
how many times your heart beats per
minute. Record this number.
2. Exercise (Star jumps) for 5 mins.
3. Measure your pulse rate again. Record this.
4. Continue to measure your pulse rate every
minute until it is back to your resting rate.
5. Plot your results on a graph, PR against
time.
