Goals
 Foreign Policy- Strategies & goals that
guide a nation’s relations w/other
countries & groups in the world.
 These will change w/the international
enviornment.
National Security
 National Security is the protection of a
nation’s borders & territories against
invasion or control by foreign powers.
 Before any other issue can be dealt with,
NS/FP must be in place.
Free & Open Trade
 NS is not just the military: It has to do w/
the nations economy and foreign trade.
 US supports free import & exporting.
World Peace
 If other nations are at peace then the US
run little risk getting into a conflict.
 US tries to help settle disputes.
 Provide aid to help stop uprisings.
 World Peace is the reason the US helped
start the UN after WWII.
Democratic Gov’t
 Symbol of Democracy
 Helps create Democracies and aids
them.
 1990’s we helped former Comm. Nations
switch over.
Humanity
 Disasters and starvation are ex. of thing
we provide aid for.
 This helps political stability in the world.
Dev. Of Foreign Policy
 Based on Isolationism until the late
1800’s.
 This means you are not involved in world
affairs.
 Internationalism-involvement in world
affairs was necessary for NS.

Monroe Doctrine
 What is it?

US as a World Power
 Because of industry the US became an
economic Power.
 1898, Spanish – American War to Free
Cuba.
 After this we acquired land in the Pacific
and Caribbean.
