Dialect
• Dialect is a way of speaking that is
associated with a specific geographical
region or group of people.
• Authors use dialect to give their
writing the feel of a particular place.
• They also use dialect to show
information about the character(s),
such as economic or social class.
Dialect
• A dialect may have its own vocabulary,
grammar, and system of pronunciation.
• Most countries and cultures have one
main dialect.
• In the U.S., it is standard English;
although, several regional dialects
exist.
Dialect
• When writers use dialect, it is
spelled exactly as it is said or
pronounced.
• Ex: “When ‘yall coming ova?”
Marie yelled loudly.
