The Trojan War…
c. 1200 BC
Where did it take place?
Why would these two
societies go to war?
as told by Homer
 C. 700 BC
Who was Homer?
We aren’t quite sure - but
historians think he was a blind
slave who told stories that
were written down by scribes.
The story begins…
 When Eris (the goddess of
discord) threw an apple that
landed…
To the fairest!
At the wedding of Thetis
and Peleus…
Paris, the son of King
Priam from Troy…
…has to decide who to
give the apple to.
Hera offers Paris
power.
Athena offers him
wisdom.
Paris offers the apple
to Aphrodite, the
goddess of Love.
Aphrodite is thrilled!
As a thank you gift, Aphrodite
gives Paris the love of the most
beautiful woman in the world…
Helen…
but…
Uh oh!
Helen is married to Menelaus, the
king of Sparta!
… but Aphrodite is
powerful!
She allows Paris to take Helen
with him to Troy.
The king is not pleased!
Agamemnon, king of Mycenae,
vows to help Menelaus try to
get his wife back…
Helen is known as…
“the face that launched 1,000
ships.” (Because that’s
supposedly how many were sent
to get her back!)
Some famous Greeks in
the War…
Odysseus (Odyssey), the Romans called him Ulysses
… and
Achilles (the Iliad) - Achilles’s heel!
The war lasts 10 years!
Until the Greeks come up with a
plan!
They pretend to leave…
and leave behind a HUGE, wooden HORSE…
The Trojans bring the
horse to the gates and…
Party!
When they are tired…
the Greeks jump out and attack!
Troy was destroyed…
And Helen went home.
The End!
… or is it just the beginning?
