PRESENTATION
U.S. GOVERNMENT
By: Allen Namoca Pd. 7
INTRODUCTION
Prompt: Where should the government “draw the line”?
INTRODUCTION
Brief History on America and it’s Government:
American soil was not identified until the late 1400s;
Columbus rediscovered America.
INTRODUCTION
10,000 years ago, America was founded by Asiatic explorers.
This was due to the Ice Age that occurred 20,000 years ago.
These Asiatic explorers came to be known as the Native Americans.
INTRODUCTION: AMERICAN
REVOLUTION
First Main Event prior to creation of an independent nation and a
government in America was the American Revolution which occurred in 1763.
INTRODUCTION: AMERICAN
REVOLUTION
The American Revolution’s purpose was to remove British rule over America
and its citizens.
American people wanted to become part of an independent nation.
INTRODUCTION: DECLARATION
OF INDEPENDENCE
The Declaration of Independence made that dream of becoming an
independent nation come true; with this America was able to break away from
British rule.
INTRODUCTION: CONSTITUTION
During the 1780s the Constitution was made as a basis to the federal
government.
U.S. became the first/modern national constitutional republic as soon as the
government was first formed in 1789.
HOW MUCH POWER FOR THE
GOVERNMENT?
The government’s role changed largely over a long period of time.
It distances itself from the people since America became a larger nation
(showing the difference from what it was like since the first Thirteen
Colonies).
HOW MUCH POWER FOR THE
GOVERNMENT?
Opinion: Government’s jurisdiction should be lesser than it is right now.
It’s true role changed over time due to the multiple events that led to the
change of the Constitution up until today.
One prime factor of how these changes occurred was the Marbury v. Madison
Case.
FACTORS THAT LED TO THE
CHANGE OF THE GOVERNMENT
Main events/factors that led to the change of the U.S. Government from
beginning to end:
•American Revolution
•Federal Government (Constitution was the basis)
•Main Three Branches of Government – Remained the same ever since it was
created.
•Government had problems in establishing powers that abides to constitution.
•Marbury v. Madison Supreme Court Case.
MARBURY V. MADISON
Supreme Court case of 1803: Marbury v. Madison
Landmark to where Court started its role in reviewing federal legislation to
determine whether or not if it was compatible with Constitution.
This indicated function of judicial review.
MARBURY V. MADISON
Secretary of State: James Madison – ordered not to deliver commissions by
President Thomas Jefferson to William Marbury.
Response of Marbury was to petition Supreme Court a legal order to
interrogate and investigate on why Magison didn’t deliver commission.
MARBURY V. MADISON
Result: Marbury was denied commission due to unconstitutional ways of
attempting to resolve the problem.
For example: the writ which could not be granted since it was considered
unconstitutional.
Chief Justice John Marshall gave statement where Supreme Court was not
only the interpreter of Constitution.
CONSTITUTION
Purpose of Constitution: establish Federal Government in U.S. and provide it
limited powers to keep it under conrol.
CONSTITUTION
Constitution states, “We, the people of the United States, in order to form a
more perfect Union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for
the common defense, promote general welfare, and secure blessings of liberty
to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for
the United States of America””
CONSTITUTION
Purpose of the Constitution tells what the government can and can’t do,
regarding on distribution of laws to society and protection of each
individuals’ rights.
FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
Government’s essential duties include:
•Defending the U.S. from foreign aggression
•Representing U.S. interests abroad
•Creating and enforcing national laws and regulations
•Administering domestic programs and agencies
•Workers employed by Federal Government are responsible for enacting and
implementing programs and performing services to accomplish them.
FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
Yes the government does provide its services towards the citizens in the U.S.;
yet, why are there people that still encounter problems today?
Problems like poverty and inability to pay for medical supplies/bills/etc.
AMERICAN REVOLUTION
The American Revolution stimulated the government of America.
Purpose: separate own country from British rule. (Have own government and
independence)
HOW DOES ALL THIS RELATE TO
LESSENING GOVERNMENT POWER?
This entire presentation was to show how the government was formed, how it
governed people, and how it provided services to people from time to time.
The reason why government should have lesser power is because of the fact
that it is given the power to help us, yet there are still those who suffer from
the fact that they are unable to obtain the simplest essentials where the
government mentioned at some point that “the citizens of the United States
shall receive the simplest necessities in order to live”. (may have been indirect)
LESSER POWER FOR
GOVERNMENT
Opinion:
Government should receive lesser power since it does not actually help
citizens when they need help the most.
They have power, yet do they do anything that resolves the problem that the
citizens encounter, directly?
LESSER POWER FOR
GOVERNMENT
As the nation continues to grow, so will the government continue to grow
apart from the people.
