How can you tell which kitten is Rainbows clone? Explain the
use of DNA.
You can tell which kitten is rainbows clone because it has the
exact same genetic make up as its mother, which in this
instance is shown as 4 colours in a sequence.
Does the clone have to look the same as Rainbow? Explain.
No, while the embryo develops the genes responsible for the
fur colour can be switched on and off at random to create
different fur patterns. This is called X-linked Inactivation.
Also genes and environment both have an effect on the fetus
while it is growing. This can cause changes in personality and
fur colour.
Isolate the donor cells from Megdo, the Mother, and Mimi the Father
Egg Cell
Somatic Cell
Remove and discard the nucleus from the egg cell
Pipette to suck out
Nucleaus
Transfer the somatic cell nucleus into the enucleated egg cell. They will need
some time to adjust to each other, this usually takes a couple of hours for the
nucleus to be reprogrammed
Enucleated

N
Stimulate Cell Division, this is needed so the cell can begin mitosis. You
need a chemical that mimics the actions of the male sperm cell, which isn't
actually called Divide-a-Lot surprisingly.
Divide-A-Lot
Implant the embryo in Momi, the surrogate mother
Deliver the baby mouse clone of Mimi
