The Bible Teaches Doctrine (part 10):
Man Pursues Through Discipleship
“True discipleship is both costly and full of
grace. It is costly because it calls us to follow.
It is grace because it calls us to follow Jesus. It
is costly because it costs us our whole life, it is
grace because it gives us the only true life. It is
costly because it condemns sin, and it is grace
because it justifies the sinner. Above all it is
costly because it cost God the life of His son.
What costs God much, we must never make
cheap! Above all it is grace because God was
willing to give up his Son for us.”
Dietrich Bonhoeffer

DISCIPLES FOLLOW
Matthew 4:18 While
walking by the Sea of Galilee,
he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called
Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net
into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19 And he
said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you
fishers of men.” 20 Immediately they left their
nets and followed him. 21 And going on from
there he saw two other brothers, James the son
of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat
with Zebedee their father, mending their nets,

and he called them. 22 Immediately they left the
boat and their father and followed him.
DISCIPLES FOLLOW
“They did not consider his claims, make up
their minds, and then decide whether to
follow—they simply heard and obeyed. Their
response is a testimony to the absolute direct,
and unaccountable authority of Jesus. Disciples
are not so much those who follow as those who
must follow.”

DISCIPLES FOLLOW
Romans 8:28 And
we know that for those who love
God all things work together for good, for
those who are called according to his purpose.
DISCIPLES FOLLOW
Matthew 11:28 Come
to me, all who labor and are
heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my
yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am
gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest
for your souls.

2 Peter 1:3 His
divine power has granted to us all
things that pertain to life and godliness,
through the knowledge of him who called us to
his own glory and excellence,

DISCIPLES SURRENDER
John 2:11 This,
the first of his signs, Jesus did at
Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And
his disciples believed in him.
DISCIPLES SURRENDER
John 10:10b
I came that they may have life and
have it abundantly.
DISCIPLES SURRENDER
Matthew 8:19 And
a scribe came up and said to him,
“Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”
20 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes,
and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of
Man has nowhere to lay his head.”
DISCIPLES SURRENDER
Matthew 10:37 Whoever
loves father or mother
more than me is not worthy of me, and
whoever loves son or daughter more than me is
not worthy of me.
DISCIPLES SURRENDER
2 Corinthians 8:9 For
you know the grace of our
Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet
for your sake he became poor, so that you by
his poverty might become rich.
DISCIPLES SURRENDER
Matthew 8:21 Another
of the disciples said to him,
“Lord, let me first go and bury my father.”
22 And Jesus said to him, “Follow me, and leave
the dead to bury their own dead.”
DISCIPLES SURRENDER
Romans 8:17 Now
if we are children, then we are
heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if
indeed we share in his sufferings in order that
we may also share in his glory.
DISCIPLES SURRENDER
Matthew 10:21 Brother
will deliver brother over to
death, and the father his child, and children will
rise against parents and have them put to death,
22 and you will be hated by all for my name’s
sake. But the one who endures to the end will
be saved.
DISCIPLES SURRENDER
Matthew 10:24 “A
disciple is not above his teacher,
nor a servant above his master. 25 It is enough
for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the
servant like his master.
DISCIPLES SURRENDER
Matthew 10:17 Beware
of men, for they will deliver
you over to courts and flog you in their
synagogues, 18 and you will be dragged before
governors and kings for my sake, to bear
witness before them and the Gentiles. 19 When
they deliver you over, do not be anxious how
you are to speak or what you are to say, for
what you are to say will be given to you in that
hour. 20 For it is not you who speak, but the
Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
DISCIPLES SURRENDER
Therefore I will boast all the more
gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of
Christ may rest upon me. 10 For the sake of
Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses,
insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities.
For when I am weak, then I am strong.

if anyone is in Christ, he

“[Discipleship] is costly because it condemns
sin, and it is grace because it justifies the sinner.
Above all it is costly because it cost God the life
of His son. What costs God much, we must

Romans 6:23 For
the wages of sin is death, but the
free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our
Lord.

1 John 3:6 No
one who abides in him keeps on
sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has
either seen him or known him.

Ephesians 2:3 we
all once lived in the passions of our
flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and
the mind, and were by nature children of wrath,
like the rest of mankind. 4 But God, being rich
in mercy, because of the great love with which
he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our
trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—
by grace you have been saved— … 10 For we are
his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for
good works, which God prepared beforehand,
that we should walk in them.
DISCIPLES CHANGE
“The man who has struggled to purify himself
and has had nothing but repeated failures will
experience real relief when he stops tinkering
with his soul and looks away to the perfect
One. While he looks at Christ, the very things
he has so long been trying to do will be getting
done within him.”
