Human Computer Interaction
Human to Computer Interaction requires input from human to start &
complete an activity - Input devices include:
Keyboard
Voice
Mouse
Touch
Stylus
Software programmers have to design HOW a human interacts with the
computer
Humans have to learn HOW to interact with the computer through the
designed Interface. Some interfaces are easy to use others are not
depending on the Usability designed into the Interface by the HCI
designers
Web Design is an
Extension of Software Design
Web design uses many Human Computer Interface
design techniques - Task Analysis is one where
designers look at how the user completes a task on a
website
The more complex the interaction - the more complex the
Usability design has to be for “user friendly” interfaces
It is human activity deconstructed into steps that
include human action and software reaction
Task Analysis technique helps the INTERACTION
designer create a user friendly web site
Structure Stage:
Architectural Diagram
User’s mental model of the interactive navigation
behavior on a web site are called Conceptual Models
Computer Interface design needs consistent behaviors to
avoid confusing the user
Navigation links should look & behave like
navigation links.
Static content should look & act like content.
Information Architecture
Concerned with designing organized navigation that allow users
to move through the website easily and effectively
Strategy (Brand Purpose/Goals & Persona Profiles) & Scope
(Features & Content Requirements) stages give very important
info on what the website has to accomplish and how much
content will be included
Feature Card sorts & Task Analysis techniques give insight on
how user’s look for information to be grouped & the actions they
may take to do something on a website
Designer’s responsibility is to come up with logical web category
arrangements for content & feature list that match:
Brand Project Goals
User Goals & Needs
Architecture Diagrams
Diagramming in form of organization charts give birdseye view like a city map of a website’s organization
Diagrams consist of a basic unit of information called the
node (similar to a city block).
Allows the designers to set the level of detail needed in
the mapping of a content layout.
Organization diagrams fall into some generalized classes
Architecture Diagrams
Major tool used by information architects to show
“wayfinding” pathways to different content in a
website
Sometimes known as site map
Allows for a visual representation of the web site’s
flow structure
Website Architectural Diagrams
•
Are like city maps
•
Content is arranged on the diagrams like buildings
are arranged on a city map
•
Each piece of content has a place depending on
how the information architect determines the
placement like a city architect determines where
buildings can be placed
MAP Diagram-Manhattan, New York – business function
Street map shows building locations
MAP Diagram of Washington DC - government function
street disgram shows building locations
Architectural diagram
Acts as website map-Use numbers for screen IDs & arrows to show navigation paths
