Abstract:
Background: Objective: To compare the patterns and features of rabies epidemic process
betweenNigeria andUkraine, to determine the main directions of preventive work, to reduce the
risk of disease, because this disease is endemic in these countries, and remains an important
public health problem to the world's population.
Methods & Materials: The analysis was done using data from the sanitary-epidemiological and
veterinary services of Ukraine and Nigeria. Analyzed the incidence of human and animal rabies
in 1995-2007. in Nigeria in comparison with those in Ukraine for the period 1995 to 2010.
Results: During the period of 1995-2007 .In Nigeria,it was found 134 cases of human rabies
whereas, in Ukraine for the period 1995 - 2010 . It was 34 cases of rabies. Reservoir of infection
in nature are bats , hyenas and foxes in Nigeria and also in Ukraine. The main source of infection
for humans are pets :In Nigeria - dogs and cats in Ukraine 37.8% and 34.5% of dogs, this is due
to a high level of primary vaccination of dogs in Ukraine and the lack of it in Nigeria. The
primary cause of the clinical symptoms of the disease in affected person is due low level of
vaccination for rabies and due to low level of awareness of the possibility of vaccination and its
effectiveness In Ukraine, underestimation of risk of danger of rabies from cat bites.Incomplete
vaccination coverage of pets can also worsen the epidemic situation of rabies.
Conclusion: The increased incidence of rabies in pets, increases the risk of human disease, which
requires a full vaccination coverage of pets: cats and dogs should be done regularly and free of
charge . Necessary to carry out sanitary and veterinary measures to reduce the number of stray
animals in both Nigeria and Ukraine. In Nigeria, people should avoid contact with bats and also
in Ukraine- to reduce the number of foxes, contact with cats, dogs and wildlife should be
avoided. There is need to intensify prevention work among the population, thus it is necessary to
take into account the level of education of the population , which is different in Nigeria and
Ukraine.
